Subtitle Editor: Full Guide

Overview

The Subtitle Editor is a powerful, modern tool for editing, syncing, and perfecting your subtitles. It combines a visual timeline, waveform, video preview, and advanced editing controls for maximum accuracy and efficiency.

Main Components

  • Video Preview: Watch your video in sync with subtitles. Scrub, play/pause, and preview changes instantly.
  • Timeline: Visual representation of all subtitle segments, with drag-and-drop handles for precise timing.
  • Waveform: Audio waveform helps you align subtitles to speech visually.
  • Subtitle List & Text Panel: Select a subtitle on the timeline to edit its text, timing, or split/merge lines.
  • Controls Panel: Adjust global time offset, apply changes, and access advanced features.

Editing Features

  • Drag to Move/Resize: Drag subtitle segments left/right to change timing, or use handles to adjust start/end.
  • Split & Merge: Use keyboard shortcuts or context menu to split a subtitle at the cursor or merge adjacent lines.
  • Text Editing: Select a subtitle, edit its text in the panel, and changes are saved automatically or with the save button.
  • Undo/Redo: Unlimited undo/redo with history stack for safe experimentation.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts: Speed up editing:
    • Ctrl+B or Shift+B: Break line at cursor
    • Ctrl+Z: Undo
    • Ctrl+Y: Redo
    • Delete: Remove selected subtitle
    • Arrow Keys: Nudge selected subtitle in time
    • Space: Play/Pause video
  • Waveform Sync: Use the waveform to align subtitle boundaries with spoken words.
  • Playhead Scrubbing: Click or drag on the timeline to scrub the video and see subtitle alignment in real time.
  • Autosave & Save: Changes are autosaved, but you can also use the save button for manual control.
  • Export: Download your edited subtitles in multiple formats directly from the editor.

Advanced Tools

  • Global Time Offset: Shift all subtitles forward/backward to fix sync issues.
  • Clean Punctuation: Automatically tidy up subtitle text for readability.
  • Translate: Translate selected or all subtitles into another language.
  • Manual Subtitle Addition: Add new subtitles at any point in the timeline.
  • Reindexing: Automatically renumber subtitles after edits.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use the waveform for perfect sync—align subtitle edges with audio peaks.
  • Keep subtitle lines short and readable (ideally <42 characters).
  • Use split/merge to match natural speech breaks.
  • Export and preview in your video player before finalizing.
  • Save often and use undo/redo to experiment safely.

Troubleshooting

  • Subtitle not syncing? Use global time offset or drag segments to realign.
  • Waveform missing? Make sure your video is loaded and supported.
  • Accidental edits? Use undo (Ctrl+Z) or redo (Ctrl+Y).
  • Export errors? Ensure all subtitles have valid timings and text.
